New Venue Launches with a 1920s Throwback

The Flying Bridge, one of D.C.’s newest event venues, hosted its official launch party on Monday night with a burlesque-themed party. Event planner Aimee Dominick of A. Dominick Events partnered with Elan Artists to provide a variety of 1920s era entertainment including scantily-clad cigarette girls, jazz musicians and—of course—burlesque dancers.

The rooftop venue, named for the open-air space atop a ship’s navigation bridge, provides views of the Capitol, Washington Monument and Union Station. The space can accommodate 200 people seated or as many as 400 for a reception and is equipped with a retractable canopy as well as heating and air conditioning for year-round events.

A tea part wouldn’t be complete without cakes, served as both raspberry and chocolate cupcakes, and a larger four-tier version shaped like the Madhatter’s top hat.

For the main event, performers skated to musical numbers from Disney faves like Alice in Wonderland, The Little Mermaid, Tangled, and Snow White.

Christmas Debuts at the Willard

The historic Willard InterContinental Hotel debuted its Christmas tree this morning for a crowd of about 50. The tree features the entire White House Christmas Ornaments collection spanning 31 years since its inception in 1981. Each year the White House Historical Association designs an ornament paying tribute to a past president or important event in White House History. This year’s ornament features President and Mrs. Taft delivering Christmas presents in their chauffeured White Motor Company Model M car bearing the U.S. Seal on its door.

Among the decorations is the ornament commemorating the 200th anniversary of the White House from 2000.

The 2003 ornament honored President Grant and his family with a hand-painted porcelain rocking horse, a common childhood toy during his presidency. The 2010 ornament paid tribute to the McKinley White House and the president’s love of music with the United States Marine Band performing at the 1900 Army-Navy reception at the White House.

Pastry chef Gary o’ Hanlon created a gingerbread version of the hotel decorated in full presidential inauguration elements. The house measures 5 1/2 feet long and 3 feet in height and is 99% edible made with:

- 54 lbs. brown sugar
- 70 lbs. granulated sugar
- 48 lbs. shortening
- 2 gallons molasses
- 250 eggs
- 4 lbs. ginger
- 4 lbs. cinnamon
- 130 lbs. flour
- 20 lbs. icing
- 10 lbs. rolled fondant

Following the tree lighting ceremony, guests moved up to the Nest on the second floor of the main bar for light bites including gingerbread cookies, pastries, and holiday theme cocktails.

The chefs also had an tribute to President Obama’s hometown of Chicago with mini hot dogs and deep dish pizzas.

Small buckets of chocolate covered caramel corn was also available adorned with an Inauguration Special Edition of the Washington Post.

Digital East 2012

The digital marketing/advertising industry’s buzzword of choice is mobile, and it’s changing online marketing. TheLadders COO Alexandre Douzet and comScore VP Khurrum Malik, who keynoted Digital East 2012 this week in Herndon, Va., say there are over 100 million smartphone users in the US. The two-day event included multiple panels and hundreds of digital marketers and advertisers.

There’s been a 5% annual increase in daily Internet usage since 2011, where one out of every six minutes is spent on a social site, so the importance of cross-medium marketing (tablets, PC, app, browser, smartphone) becomes even bigger to reach the new digital omnivore (i.e. your potential clients). Khurrum points out that while Android and Apple still dominate the market, Amazon is gaining ground with its Kindle Fire.

Travel Channel’s Hotel Impossible host Anthony Melchiorri, being interviewed by TechMedia's Eric Gregg

It stinks getting a negative comment on your company’s travel review web site or Facebook wall. Travel Channel’s Hotel Impossible host Anthony Melchiorri, being interviewed by TechMedia‘s Eric Gregg, had some simple insight during his keynote Wednesday: “If you’re doing a crappy job in person, you’ll look that way online. So do well in person with the basics [of customer service] and you’ll look good online.”
