Get Inspired: How to Use Bright Colors Without Overpowering Your Event

With Andy Warhol art on the walls of the atrium, Eric Michael and Jack Lucky used a 1970s-inspired color palette of bright orange, yellow, pink, and neon green. Perfect Settings provided linens in each of these colors to create alternating color blocks from table to table.

With Andy Warhol art on the walls of the atrium, Eric Michael and Jack Lucky used a 1970s-inspired color palette of bright orange, yellow, pink, and neon green. Perfect Settings provided linens in each of these colors to create alternating color blocks from table to table.

Vibrant colors reverberated throughout the Corcoran Gallery of Art for the 58th annual Corcoran Ball, with each gallery boasting bright spring hues like yellow, coral, pink, blue, and green. The team behind the ball’s look took inspiration from the color palette and art in the galleries to create individual looks for each room.

The museum’s Women’s Committee turned to Jack Lucky of Jack H. Lucky Floral Design, Occasions Caterers’ Eric Michael, and Barbara Grazzini of Perfect Settings L.L.C once again to transform the museum for the ball. The 721 guests dined on a three-course meal at elaborately decorated tables set up throughout the museum’s eight galleries, atrium, and rotunda—the only time food and drink are allowed in these spaces.

Check out how the team created an effective design without overpowering the environment.

Jason Wu, Louis Vuitton Inspire Decor at Fashion for Paws

Syzygy Events International returned as the visionaries behind the staging and decor for the Washington Humane Society’s Fashion for Paws fund-raiser on Saturday night. The team aimed for a completely different look at the National Building Museum than last year’s flower-filled fete, opting for a more modern look with emerald accents—in honor of the color’s designation as color of the year.
Designers Marielle Shortell and Julie Shanklin took inspiration from fashion designers Jason Wu’s and Louis Vuitton’s 2013 spring collections with sleek, black and white decor with checkered details. Combining their efforts with Atmosphere Lighting, rentals from DC Rental and  Design Cuisine—who also catered the dinner—and minimalistic-style floral centerpieces from Edge Floral Event Designers, the 1,700-person event transformed the museum and raised about $700,000.

We went to the Ronald Reagan Building for WomenHeart‘s 13th Annual Wenger Awards and dinner Monday night honoring those who’ve made an impact on women’s heart health. Before they went on stage, we snapped honorees Abbott Vascular’s Jerri Anne Johnson, organization CEO Lisa Tate, Dr. Rita Redberg, and WomenHeart chair—and heart attack survivor—Carrie Loveless.

5

Also honored: Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s Dr. Carolyn Clancy, and Dr. Nanette Wenger, for whom the awards are named. The program included moving testimonials from heart disease survivors, as well as a seemingly impromptu, and very amusing, operatic performance from the banquet manager and sommelier.

See How One Graphic Inspired a Major Fund-Raising Gala’s Entire Look

At one of the largest fund-raisers in the city, nearly 2,000 people attended the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s 26th annual ball Saturday at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. After booking the night’s headliners, Jim Belushi and the Sacred Hearts Band and comedian Dana Carvey, organizers turned to the Internet for decor inspiration.

“Jim has a sort of bluesy feel to him, so we were trying to come [up] with a theme to complement that and decided on Saturday Night Blues,” said event producer Julie Hanson of Hanson Productions. “We then Googled images of jazz saxophone silhouettes, found one with this orange swoosh around him and loved it, so built everything around that.”

The image’s influence was evident throughout the reception and dinner spaces in everything from the linens and centerpieces to the lighting, additional entertainment, and printed collateral.

Here are the event decor, staging, catering, and entertainment highlights from the benefit.

Starlight Children’s Foundation Switches to Moveable Feast Format for Swamp-Themed Fund-Raiser

Amaryllis draped Spanish moss from all of the chandeliers and wall sconces to create a swampy atmosphere.

The Starlight Children’s Foundation once again returned to the Four Seasons in Georgetown on Saturday to host its 13th annual fund-raiser. The co-chairs for this year’s gala decided to revamp the style of the event from a seated dinner for 470 to a moveable feast and cocktail party. The group reached out to Aimee Dominick of A. Dominick Events to bring the new setup and the design inspiration—John Berendt’s nonfiction novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil—to life.

“It’s been the same event in the same space for the past 12 years, so the idea of breathing new life into something is exciting,” said Dominick.

Dominick noted the new catering setup, with seven food stations and a myriad of passed, heavy hors d’oeuvres, provided a challenge to ensure the guests, who paid $500 per ticket, still felt satiated without the three-course dinner. The hotel’s catering staff doubled the quantity of food this year to accommodate.

“For a normal plated meal you usually have [for example] butternut squash, then the main course is a petite fillet with vegetables and a starch; it’s not a lot of quantity,” said Dominick. “Where something like this, we want them to feel like they’ve had enough to eat and seen interesting things coming by.”

Options included shrimp or pork shoulder tacos, roast beef or fried oyster po boys—accompanied with Zapp’s potato chips from New Orleans—mini hot dogs with all the trimmings, passed sliders, mini bowls of mac and cheese, and chicken quesadillas.

Fabrication Events used heavy black drape to cover the walls of the three rooms. Frost Lighting used a selection of golden, red, and green lighting to create a swamp-like atmosphere. Amaryllis added to the effect with Spanish moss suspended from the chandeliers, wall sconces, and by adding lit lanterns and candelabras to the cocktail and lounge seating throughout the rooms.

E! News correspondent Ashlan Gorse served as the night’s M.C. and assisted auctioneer Dean Crownover in generating attention for the live auction that brought in nearly $600,000 for the foundation. New Orleans musicians the Honey Island Swamp Band provided the main entertainment for the evening, before turning the crowd over to DJ Blue for the after-party, which brought in an additional 90 guests who purchased the discounted Young Professionals Council ticket.

Who’s Who of the Starlight Children’s Foundation Gala

We went to the Four Seasons Saturday night, whose lower level was turned into a scene from Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil for the Starlight Children’s Foundation’s Taste of the Stars gala.

Between her emcee duties, we chatted with E! News correspondent Ashlan Gorse and her fiancé EarthEcho’s Philippe Cousteau.

We saw MSNBC correspondent Norah O’Donnell with Korn/Ferry’s Nels Olson in the VIP sponsor lounge.

This year’s co-chairs Annie Magruder, Karen Lohnes, and Kirsten Pollin replaced the traditional sit down dinner with a moveable feast with food stations and passed apps and cocktail seating.

Mrs. DC, Arika Burton came with her husband Avenue Wealth’s Brad Burton. Thanks to Imijination Photography for the pics.

Fight Night and Knock Out Abuse Galas Beef Up Auction, Sponsors

André Wells created an entryway to the event space reminiscent of the Moulin Rouge’s signature windmill and red signage.

Fight for Children and Knock Out Abuse held their simultaneous annual galas again on Thursday night at the Washington Hilton and Ritz-Carlton, Washington D.C. respectively. Fight Night drew nearly 1,800 men—and a few ladies—for the first event since founder Joe Roberts passed away in December 2011. Organizers viewed the night as a growing year with a special tribute video to Roberts, which reemphasized the annual fund-raiser’s mission of providing quality education to the metro area’s children no matter their economic level.

In keeping on message, marketing and event manager Kristen Fagley increased the production surrounding the live auction this year. “We’ve tried to create more entertainment to get people’s attention before we start the bidding to hopefully raise more money,” Fagley said.

Prior to announcing the first item—a trip to the Academi training facility in North Carolina—the lights went down, helicopter sounds began blaring, and entertainers dressed as soldiers made their way to the stage. The fanfare helped sell three of the trip packages for a total of $120,000. Overall the live auction raised $239,000, about $81,000 more than last year. Following that, the M.C. hosted a call-to-action donation for the first time, drawing in nearly $20,000 in additional donations for Joe’s Champs, a new Fight for Children program in honor of founder Joe Roberts. In total, the night brought in $2.2 million—up $200,000 from last year.

Over at the Ritz-Carlton, the women-dominated Knock Out Abuse gala—attended by many of the spouses and significant others of the Fight Night attendees—also saw an increase in its bottom line with the addition of 35 new sponsors, such as Saks Fifth Avenue and General Motors Company, bringing the total to 68 this year compared to 47 in 2011. Organization co-founder Cheryl Masri credits the presidential campaign and local news coverage with the increased exposure to the effect of domestic violence on women and children.

“People are more aware [of our cause] and probably because the campaign, both sides, has made everyone more aware of women’s issues,” said Masri. “There has been a lot in the news this past year about a number of murder cases that are caused by domestic violence, and the men and women in our community are more aware of the needs of those affected.”

Designed by Events by Andre Wells, the sold-out Moulin Rouge-themed soiree of 650 raised $660,000 overall this year, an increase by $100,000 compared to 2011, from ticket sales and silent and live auctions.

After Fight Night’s final boxing match and the women’s dinner completed, the two parties joined together at the Ritz-Carlton for the combined after-party with special entertainment by Doug E. Fresh.
